The Most Requested Equestrian Structure in Ocala

A round pen is the first structure most horse trainers and horse owners add to a property. It gives you a safe, contained space for groundwork, lunging, and starting young horses under saddle.

Fences R Us has built round pens across Marion County since 2003. Manny and his crew have built them at private horse farms, training facilities, and show properties. Every post goes in the ground in concrete. Every gate is hung level and built for daily use.

Manny specs size, panel style, and gate width at the site visit based on pen use and property layout.

Most popular
60
ft diameter

More room for riding circles and canter work. Preferred by trainers for started horses. Requires more post material.

Training facilities
66
ft diameter

Larger diameter for professional training operations. Gives horses more natural movement at all gaits.

Wood vs Pipe Panel Round Pens

Wood Round Pen

Pressure treated posts with horizontal wood boards or rails. The most common round pen style on private horse farms in Marion County. Posts are set in concrete. Boards are face-nailed with ring-shank nails or structural screws. A wood round pen can be painted or stained to match the property.

Panel height is typically 5 to 6 feet. Taller panels are available for young horses or stallions. A kick board at the base keeps hooves from going under the panel.

Solid vs open panel: Solid panels block the horse's view of the outside. Open rail panels let the horse see out. Solid panels are better for spooky or easily distracted horses. Open panels are fine for horses that work confidently in an enclosed space.

Pipe Panel Round Pen

Steel pipe panels bolted to pipe posts set in concrete. More durable under direct horse contact than wood. Does not rot or warp. No painting required. Pipe panels cost more than wood up front but last significantly longer.

Pipe round pens are common at training facilities and properties where horses test the fence daily. Panels can be removed and posts left in place if the pen needs to be moved.

Frequently Asked Questions About Round Pen Installation in Ocala, FL

What size round pen should I get?
50 feet is the most common size in Marion County. It works for both groundwork and under-saddle training. A 40-foot pen is fine for groundwork only. A 60-foot pen gives more room for canter work and is preferred at training facilities. Manny will advise based on your property layout and how you plan to use the pen.
How long does it take to build a round pen?
A 50-foot wood round pen typically takes one day for a two-person crew. Pipe panel pens take one to two days. Larger pens at 60 or 66 feet take longer. You get a firm timeline at the quote stage.
Do I need a permit for a round pen in Marion County?
Agricultural structures on agriculturally zoned land in unincorporated Marion County generally do not require a permit. Properties inside city limits or on residentially zoned land have different rules. Manny can advise based on your property address during the site visit.
Wood or pipe panel round pen : which is better?
Wood costs less up front and can be painted to match your property. Pipe panels last longer, need no maintenance, and hold up better under daily horse contact. For private farm use, wood is fine. For training facilities where horses are in the pen every day, pipe panels are the better long-term value.
How deep do round pen posts need to be set in Florida?
All round pen posts at Fences R Us are set a minimum of 2.5 feet deep in concrete. Gate posts go deeper. Florida's sandy soil does not grip posts the way clay soil does, so concrete is used on every post in the pen, not just corners.
How wide should the round pen gate be?
A 4-foot gate lets a handler and horse pass through side by side. A 6-foot gate gives more clearance for young horses that are not yet leading well. Most Marion County round pens use a 4-foot gate. Manny will confirm gate width at the site visit based on how you will use the pen.
