Arena Fencing Built for Horse Traffic in Central Florida

A riding arena fence takes more punishment than almost any other fence on a horse property. Horses run into it, lean on it, and test it every time they work. Posts need to go deeper. Corner assemblies need more bracing. Gate posts need concrete at full depth.

Fences R Us has built riding arena fencing at private farms and training facilities across Marion County since 2003. Manny specs every arena job based on size, fence type, and daily horse use.

Arena fencing is priced and built as a perimeter. Footing, grading, and lighting are separate from the fence work.

Three Fence Types Used on Riding Arenas in Marion County

Board Fencing

Pressure treated boards on pressure treated or creosote posts. The most traditional arena fence style. Visible, clean, and familiar to horses. Posts are set deeper than standard pasture fence because arena corners take more lateral load.

A 4-board configuration at 54 to 60 inches is standard for riding arenas. A top cap rail is recommended to protect post tops from moisture and add visual definition to the arena perimeter.

Pipe Rail Fencing

Steel pipe rail on steel pipe posts set in concrete. The most durable option under direct horse contact. Does not rot, warp, or need painting. More expensive up front than wood but outlasts it significantly.

Pipe rail is common at training facilities where the arena fence takes daily horse contact.

No-Climb Wire with Board Top Rail

No-climb wire at 48 to 54 inches with a board top rail for visibility. Lower cost than full board fencing for larger arenas. The board top rail keeps horses from running into the fence at speed. Wire panels prevent leg entrapment.

Why Arena Posts Are Set Differently Than Pasture Posts

An arena fence takes more direct horse pressure than a pasture fence. Horses cut corners, drift into the rail, and sometimes run directly into the fence. Post depth and concrete are non-negotiable on arena builds.

Post LocationDepthConcretePost Size
Corner Posts3.5 to 4 ftAlways6x6 minimum
Gate Posts3.5 to 4 ftAlways6x6 minimum
Line Posts2.5 to 3 ftAlways on arena4x4 or 6x6

All line posts on riding arenas are set in concrete by Fences R Us. Pasture line posts may be tamped. Arena fence takes too much lateral load for tamped posts in Florida sand.

Frequently Asked Questions About Riding Arena Fencing in Ocala, FL

What is the standard size for a riding arena?
The most common size in Marion County is 66 by 132 feet. This matches the 20 by 40 meter standard used in dressage and general training. Larger arenas at 80 by 160 feet give more room for jumping and multiple horses. Smaller arenas at 60 by 120 feet work for limited space properties.
What fence type is best for a riding arena?
Board fencing is the most common choice for private horse farms. It looks traditional, horses respect it, and it holds up well under normal arena use. Pipe rail is better for training facilities where the fence takes contact from multiple horses every day. No-climb wire with a top rail is a lower-cost option for larger arenas.
How tall should riding arena fencing be?
54 to 60 inches is standard for riding arena fencing in Marion County. Taller at 66 to 72 inches is used at facilities that work with young horses or do jumping. The height is confirmed at the site visit based on how the arena will be used.
Does Fences R Us install arena footing?
No. Fences R Us handles the perimeter fence, gates, and post installation. Arena footing, grading, and drainage are handled by a separate contractor. Manny can advise on how the fence layout affects drainage planning during the site visit.
How many gates does a riding arena need?
Most arenas have one main entry gate wide enough for a horse and handler side by side. A second gate on the opposite end is useful for larger arenas where equipment needs to enter. Standard gate width for an arena entry is 6 to 8 feet. Manny will discuss gate placement during the site visit.
