The gate is the most used part of any farm fence. It opens and closes multiple times a day. It takes the weight of people and equipment pushing against it. It has to stay plumb and latched in Florida heat and humidity. A gate hung on a poorly set post will sag within months.
Fences R Us has installed farm gates across Marion, Alachua, Citrus, Levy, and Sumter counties since 2003. Every gate post goes in the ground at the right depth and in concrete. Gates are hung level and square. Hardware is sized for the gate weight and use frequency.
Gates are quoted as part of a full fence job or as standalone installations on existing fence. Manny looks at the fence line, traffic pattern, and equipment size before specifying a gate width or style.

Farm Gate Options Installed by Fences R Us in Central Florida
The right gate depends on what passes through it, how often it opens, and what fence it connects to.
Single Swing Gate
A single panel that swings on two hinges from one post. The most common gate on Marion County farms. Available in wood and galvanized pipe. Widths from 4 feet for walk-through access up to 12 feet for equipment. The free end drops into a ground socket or latches to a catch post.
Best for: paddock entries, pasture access, walk-through pointsDouble Drive Gate
Two panels meeting in the center. Each panel hangs from its own post. When both panels open, the full drive width is clear for tractors, trailers, and large equipment. Standard double drive gate widths are 12, 14, and 16 feet total opening. The center latch secures both panels when closed.
Best for: farm driveways, equipment yards, trailer accessSliding Gate
A panel that rolls sideways on a track rather than swinging open. Useful where a swinging gate would block traffic flow. Also works on slopes where a standard swing is not possible. Requires a longer post run alongside the fence to carry the gate when open. More hardware and labor than a swing gate.
Best for: high-traffic entries, sloped driveways, limited swing clearanceTube Gate (Cattle Panel Gate)
A welded steel tube frame with horizontal rails. Comes in standard widths of 10, 12, and 16 feet and heights of 48 to 60 inches. Galvanized finish resists rust. Used widely on cattle operations in Marion County for its strength, ease of use, and low maintenance. Hung on heavy-duty strap hinges bolted to a wood or pipe post.
Best for: cattle operations, loading areas, high-use pasture entriesWood Farm Gate
Pressure treated lumber frame with board or plank infill. Built to match board fencing on the same property. A wood gate costs less than pipe or steel and looks right on a board fence line. It requires periodic painting or staining to hold up in Florida sun. Post must be set deeper and in concrete due to the gate weight.
Best for: matching board fence lines, lower-traffic entriesWood, Pipe, and Galvanized Steel Farm Gates
Each material has a different cost, weight, lifespan, and maintenance requirement in Florida conditions. Here is the side-by-side breakdown.
| Material | Relative Cost | Lifespan in FL | Maintenance | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galvanized Steel Tube | Mid | 20 to 40 years | Very low | Cattle, high-use farm entries |
| Galvanized Pipe (custom) | Mid-high | 25 to 40 years | Very low | Drive gates, equipment yards |
| Pressure Treated Wood | Low-mid | 15 to 25 years | Medium (paint/stain) | Board fence match, lower-traffic |
| Powder Coated Steel | Highest | 30 to 50 years | Low | Entry gates, ornamental use |
Choosing the Right Gate Width for Your Property
Gate width is determined by the widest equipment or vehicle that needs to pass through. Getting this wrong means either blocking access or wasting money on a gate wider than needed.

Why Gate Post Installation Determines How Long the Gate Works
A sagging gate is almost always a post problem, not a gate problem. The gate post carries the full swing weight of the gate on every open and close. In Florida's sandy soil, a post without concrete will shift under that repeated load within a few seasons.
Post Depth Requirements
Gate posts on farm gates go deeper than line posts. A standard fence line post at 2.5 feet is not deep enough for a gate post. Fences R Us sets gate posts at a minimum of 3.5 feet and in concrete on every job. Wider and heavier gates get deeper posts.
Post Size
Gate posts need to be larger in diameter than line posts. A 4-inch or 6-inch round post is standard for wood gate posts. Pipe gate posts are typically 2-inch or 3-inch schedule 40 steel pipe set in concrete. The post size is matched to the gate width and weight.
Brace Post
On wider gates, a brace post sits next to the hinge post. A horizontal brace and diagonal wire connect the two. The brace spreads the gate load across both posts. This keeps the hinge post from leaning over time.
Concrete Footing
Every gate post set by Fences R Us gets a concrete footing. No exceptions. The concrete is poured around the post and allowed to cure before the gate is hung. Hanging a gate before concrete cures moves the post out of plumb. The gate never hangs right after that.
Gates on field wire fencing require the same post depth and bracing as stand-alone farm gates. See the Field Wire Fencing page for corner brace assembly details used on wire fence gate openings.
Hinges, Latches, and Hardware for Farm Gates in Florida
Gate hardware fails more often than the gate itself. Florida humidity corrodes cheap hardware fast. Fences R Us uses galvanized or stainless hardware on every gate installation.
| Hardware Item | Standard Spec | Upgrade Option | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hinges | Galvanized strap hinges | Heavy-duty weld-on | Sized to gate weight. Minimum 2 hinges per panel. |
| Latch | Galvanized bolt or slam latch | Chain latch, drop rod | Livestock-proof latches for paddock gates |
| Drop Rod | Galvanized steel rod and socket | Buried concrete socket | Secures the open end of a single gate to the ground |
| Gate Wheel | Available on request | Heavy-duty caster | Supports wide gates and prevents sag over time |
| Cane Bolt | Standard on double gates | Spring-loaded | Locks the inactive panel of a double gate to the ground |
