The Post Is the Foundation of Every Fence. When It Fails, the Fence Fails.

A fence panel is only as stable as the posts holding it. In Marion County, posts fail for two reasons above all others. Sandy soil without concrete. Wood rot at the ground line.

Sandy soil provides almost no grip on a post. A post set in tamped sand in central Florida will shift under fence load, wind pressure, and temperature-driven soil movement. It may take two or three years, but it will lean. When one post leans, the rails pull and the boards start to look wrong.

Wood rot at the ground line is invisible until the fence starts to move. Pressure treated wood resists rot but does not prevent it forever. Moisture, insects, and soil organisms attack treated wood at ground level over time. A post that looks fine above ground may be soft and punky at its base.

How Fences R Us Replaces a Fence Post

1
Detach the Fence Panels

Rails, boards, or fabric are detached from the post on both sides. The fence panels on either side lean against adjacent posts and remain in place during the work.

2
Remove the Old Post

The old post and any old concrete is pulled out of the hole. Old concrete is broken up and removed. The hole is cleaned out to bare soil at the correct depth for the replacement post.

3
Set the New Post in Concrete

The new post is set plumb, braced temporarily, and concrete is poured around it. The post top is checked for plumb again before the concrete begins to set. Bracing stays in place until the concrete cures.

4
Reattach the Fence (Next Day)

After 24 to 48 hours of concrete cure time, the rails, boards, or fabric are reattached to the new post. Gate hardware is rehung and adjusted to level if the replaced post is a gate post.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my fence post needs to be replaced?
If the post leans more than 2 inches out of plumb and cannot be pushed back, the base has failed. If the post rocks when you push on it, the footing has lost its grip. If the post base is soft to the touch or the wood is dark and punky at ground level, rot has compromised the post. Any of these conditions means replacement.
Can a leaning post be straightened without replacing it?
Sometimes. If the post is still structurally sound but the concrete footing has broken free, the post can sometimes be pushed back plumb and the footing regrouted. If the post base is rotted, the wood is kinked, or the concrete has heaved, replacement is the right call. Manny assesses each post individually.
How deep do replacement fence posts need to be in Marion County?
Line posts for 6-foot privacy fence go a minimum of 2 feet deep in concrete. Gate posts and corner posts go 2.5 to 3 feet. Posts for taller fences go deeper. The general rule is one-third of the total post length in the ground.
How long after a post is set can the fence be reattached?
Concrete needs at least 24 hours to cure before any load is applied. Cold weather slows curing. Fences R Us allows 24 to 48 hours before reattaching rails and boards on post replacement jobs. This protects the footing from being disturbed while the concrete is setting.
Can you replace just one post without affecting the whole fence?
Yes. A single post can be replaced by detaching the rails and boards on either side, pulling the old post, setting a new post in concrete, and reattaching the fence panels after cure. The fence on either side stays in place throughout.
