Protect Vehicles From Florida Sun, Rain, and Hail Without Building a Garage

Florida sun fades paint, cracks dashboards, and degrades rubber seals faster than almost any other climate in the country. UV exposure is the number one cause of premature vehicle aging on Marion County properties. A metal-roofed carport cuts UV exposure to near zero for any vehicle parked under it.

Carports and vehicle covers are the most cost-effective covered storage option for cars, trucks, trailers, boats, and RVs. They cost significantly less than a full garage and go up in one to two days with no foundation work.

Fences R Us builds carports and vehicle covers for residential and farm properties across five Central Florida counties. Single-vehicle, double-vehicle, and multi-bay configurations. Posts in concrete on every build.

Open Carport vs Enclosed Vehicle Cover

Open Carport

Four posts and a roof. No side walls. Maximum airflow. Best for everyday vehicles that get driven daily. The open design provides UV and rain protection while keeping the structure cool and the vehicle accessible from any side. The most common carport style on Marion County residential properties.

Three-Wall Cover

Three sides enclosed, one side open. More weather protection than an open carport. Better for stored or less-used vehicles where wind-driven rain from three directions is a concern. The back wall and two side walls block most weather. The open front allows easy pull-in and pull-out access.

Boat and RV Cover

Taller structure with a higher clearance eave for RVs, fifth wheels, and tall boat trailers. Standard carport height of 8 feet is not enough for most Class A RVs or pontoon boats on trailers. RV and boat covers are built with 12 to 14-foot eave heights and wider bays to match the vehicle dimensions.

Attached Carport

An attached carport shares one wall with the house or garage and extends outward from it. Less expensive than a free-standing carport because one wall and post set are eliminated. Requires a proper ledger board connection to the existing structure and flashing at the roof junction to prevent leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should a carport be for a full-size truck?
A full-size truck needs a minimum of 14 feet of width and 24 feet of depth. Adding 2 feet on each side gives comfortable door-opening room. A 20-foot wide carport fits two full-size trucks side by side with room to open all four doors.
How tall does a carport need to be for an RV?
It depends on the RV type. Class B vans are around 9 feet tall. Class C motorhomes run 10 to 11 feet. Class A motorhomes reach 11 to 13.5 feet. Add 18 inches above the vehicle height for clearance. Most RV carports in Marion County are built with 12 to 14-foot eave heights.
Do carports need a permit in Marion County?
Residential carports above a certain size typically require a permit in Marion County. Agricultural carports on farm property have different rules. Requirements vary by zone and municipality. Manny reviews permit requirements based on your property address before starting any carport build.
How long does a carport last in Florida?
A carport built with pressure treated posts in concrete and 26-gauge metal roofing lasts 20 to 30 years in Florida conditions. The posts outlast the roofing in most cases. Metal roofing near salt air on coastal properties may need replacement sooner.
Can a carport be converted to an enclosed garage?
Yes, with modifications. The posts and roof framing from a carport can often be used as the starting point for an enclosed structure. Side walls, a door opening, and roofing upgrades convert an open carport into a three-wall or four-wall structure. Manny can assess the existing structure during a site visit.
