A lean-to or pole barn solves a specific problem. You have hay that needs to stay dry. Equipment that sits outside and rusts. Livestock that need shade and shelter during Florida's heat and storms. A covered workspace that does not exist yet.
Fences R Us has been building lean-tos and pole barns across Marion County since 2003. These are not pre-engineered kit structures. Manny designs each build around the property, the use, and the budget. Posts go in the ground, not on concrete pads. Pressure treated lumber throughout. Metal roofing that handles Florida sun and rain without warping or leaking.
The same crew that builds your fence can handle the lean-to or pole barn on the same trip. One contractor, one quote, one build day.
Heat, rain, and storm exposure are the main reasons untreated or lightly built structures fail within a decade in Florida. Pressure treated posts and metal roofing are the baseline for a structure that lasts.
Lean-Tos and Pole Barns Built for Central Florida
Fences R Us builds several types of covered structures. Here is what each one is and who needs it.
Equipment Storage Lean-Tos
A three-sided lean-to attached to an existing structure or built freestanding keeps tractors, ATVs, implements, and trailers out of the weather. Open front for easy drive-in access. Metal roof sheds rain. Pressure treated posts handle ground contact without rotting.
Common sizes run 20 by 20 feet up to 40 by 60 feet for larger equipment collections.
Best for: farms, rural properties, equipment dealersHay Storage Structures
Hay stored outside in Florida rots fast. A covered hay storage lean-to keeps round bales and square bales dry through the wet season. Open sides allow airflow to prevent mold. Metal roof is the only practical option for hay storage in Florida humidity.
Standard hay lean-tos start at 20 by 40 feet. Size is based on how many bales you need to store at peak.
Best for: horse farms, cattle operations, feed suppliersLivestock Shelter Lean-Tos
A simple three-sided shelter gives cattle and horses a place to get out of the sun and rain without full stall confinement. Fences R Us builds livestock lean-tos in multiple configurations. Single bay for a small herd, multi-bay for larger operations.
Often built as part of a larger fencing project so animals have shelter in the same paddock as their fence line.
Best for: cattle farms, horse properties, goat and sheep operationsWorkshop and Utility Pole Barns
A pole barn gives you a covered workspace, storage building, or multi-use structure without the cost of a traditional concrete block building. Posts set in the ground, metal roof, wood or metal siding, and a concrete floor if needed. Sizes range from a small 20 by 30 feet up to large 40 by 80 foot multi-bay structures.
Fences R Us handles the structural shell. Electrical and concrete are coordinated separately if needed.
Best for: rural workshops, feed storage, multi-use farm buildingsHorse Run-In Sheds
A run-in shed is a three-sided open-front shelter sized for one or more horses. Horses come and go on their own. No stall doors, no daily mucking required. Fences R Us builds run-in sheds from 12 by 12 feet for a single horse up to 24 by 36 feet for a small herd.
Posts are pressure treated. Roofing is metal. Skirt boards keep horses from pushing through the base.
Best for: pasture horses, dry lots, small horse farmsCarports and Vehicle Covers
A freestanding lean-to or pole barn style carport keeps vehicles, boats, and RVs out of the Florida sun. UV exposure destroys paint, plastic, and rubber faster in Central Florida than almost anywhere else in the country. A covered structure extends the life of whatever sits under it.
Sizes are built to fit the specific vehicles. Manny measures what you need to cover before quoting.
Best for: rural properties, hobby farms, vehicle and boat storageCommon Lean-To and Pole Barn Sizes

Materials Used on Every Lean-To and Pole Barn
Fences R Us does not use standard hardware store lumber on lean-to and pole barn builds. Florida soil, heat, and rain require treated materials at every point where wood contacts the ground or is exposed to weather.
Set directly in the ground at a minimum of 3 feet depth. Treated to resist rot and insects in Florida's sandy, moist soil. Posts are the most critical component. If the post fails, everything above it fails.
Corrugated or standing seam metal roofing. Handles Florida rain, UV exposure, and wind load far better than shingles or polycarbonate panels. Does not warp, rot, or blow off in a typical Florida thunderstorm.
All structural framing uses pressure treated lumber. This includes the top plate, rafters, and any purlins that support the roofing. Untreated framing in a Florida outdoor structure has a lifespan measured in years, not decades.
Open sides are standard on hay and livestock lean-tos. Enclosed walls use metal siding or pressure treated boards depending on the application and budget. Siding is spec'd during the site visit based on use.
Getting a Lean-To or Pole Barn Built by Fences R Us
Call (352) 266-2849 or fill out the contact form. Tell Manny what you need to build and roughly where on the property it will go.
Manny comes out to look at the property, check the soil, confirm dimensions, and talk through the design. Pole barns and lean-tos are sized based on what you need to fit inside them. He does not quote from a phone call.
You get a written quote with dimensions, materials, and a firm price before any work starts. If the project involves both fencing and a lean-to, both are quoted together.
Most lean-tos and small pole barns are completed in one to two days. Larger multi-bay structures take longer. The crew shows up on the scheduled date and works through to completion.
Manny walks the finished build with you before the crew leaves. Any adjustment gets handled on the spot. That is how 22 years of work in Marion County operates.
